Shadow Box Trim Wainscot

Shadow Box Trim Wainscot

Earlier this year I installed shadow box trim wainscoting in the front living room of my cousin’s home, in preparation for a big family event they were planning.  Shadow box trim gives a room a more formal and elegant feel.  It creates a wainscot a little different from others I’ve done in the past, like bead board and batten board, which I blogged about here.

Raised Laundry Platform

after

I built another raised laundry platform recently through my company Lone Pine Construction, a little different from the last couple I discussed in my previous built-in raised laundry platform post, and will show step by step how this one was constructed for those who would like to build one themselves.

Corner Stage

corner stage

One thing I’ve learned as a foster parent is that kids love attention.  A recent customer had me add a feature to their basement family room to give their kids some of that attention… a corner stage.

Mirror Frame

framed mirror

Last year for Desiree’s Christmas present I made a custom built-in jewelry cabinet for our master bathroom.  It went over so well that I decided to stick with the master bath home-improvement theme for this year’s present.   Desiree had been wanting to change the color scheme in our master bathroom to something more calm and serene, and also wanted a frame for the vanity mirror.

Framed Built-ins:

Framed Built-ins

Would you like custom built-ins without the custom built-in price tag?  Frame them!  Ealier this year I finished a basement for some customers who wanted some built-in bookshelves with a toy chest, and a TV area with shelves and component cubbies.  It took a little more work and material with the framing, sheetrock, trim and painting stages of the project, but saved them money over going with custom built-in cabinets.

Window Seat with Storage

window seat

Some really awesome friends of mine decided to take advantage of the space in their living room bay window by adding a window seat with storage for their piano books.  They felt the space would be more useful for them with a built-in seat, and the extra storage would alleviate any clutter near the piano.

3-Week Basement Finish: How to Create a Construction Schedule for Your Project

construction schedule

Scheduling is a key component of managing any construction project.  I recently completed a partial basement finish with a large family room, kid’s study, and some storage closets, in just 3 weeks. Here’s how I scheduled the work so that it could be finished in just 16 work days:

Wood Front Door

new alder front door

Repainting exterior painted surfaces of a home, such as exterior doors, as needed about every other year or so is normal maintenance.  Last fall, I noticed all our exterior doors needed to be repainted.  I had an unfinished reject alder door slab sitting in my basement for years, thinking I would someday use it to switch out our front door.  So instead of taking the time to repaint our steel front door last fall, I replaced it with the wood door slab.

Batten Board

master after (right side)

Give a room or accent wall some personality with batten board wainscoting.  It breaks up bare walls, can be used in many different kinds of rooms, and is relatively inexpensive for a DIYer to install. Batten board wainscoting can be 3-feet tall, 6-feet tall, or really any height you like, and topped with a decorative cap or shelf.

Built-In Raised Laundry Platform

raised laundry platform

We bought a front load washer and dryer 5 years ago when we built our home.  Instead of paying the $600 for washer & dryer pedestals (which are nice for raising the height of the washer and dryer as well as providing storage), I built a raised platform in our laundry room out of left-over building materials I already had.  Raising front load washers and dryers makes doing laundry more ergonomic,  with less bending over.  I recently built a raised laundry platform in another home that improved upon my origional design by adding tile, cubbies for laundry bins below and additional built-in storage shelving.
