Window Seat with Storage

Some really awesome friends of mine decided to take advantage of the space in their living room bay window by adding a window seat with storage for their piano books.  They felt the space would be more useful for them with a built-in seat, and the extra storage would alleviate any clutter near the piano.

Here’s what the bay window looked like before:

Here, a template is being made for the window seat top.  Strips of wood are glued together with a hot glue gun to form the profile of the walls.  This template is then taken to the shop and traced onto the material that will be made into the window seat top.  Using a template helps to get a nice tight fit, minimizing any sanding or cutting required on site during installation.  This same template process is often used for countertops, built-in desk tops, etc.

Here’s how it looked after installing the window seat…

There was enough room for 3 deep drawers in the middle, plus a couple of cabinet doors on the ends to take advantage of the area in front of the angled walls of the bay- a great use of space.  And now they’ve added a seat cushion on top:
